Out/In the Universe is a multimedia installation that references the profound experience of existing on the threshold between the inner self and the boundless cosmos. Composed of mirrors installed within a glass-walled space, this installation draws inspiration from the awe-inspiring clarity of the night sky at Chaco Canyon, where the stars are visible in their full splendor.
The reflective surfaces create a disorienting and immersive environment, dissolving the boundaries between the enclosed space and the vastness beyond. In this mirrored realm, viewers are confronted with the illusion of infinite space, evoking a sensation of being completely exposed to the outer universe. This experience shatters the conventional barrier between inside and outside, prompting a realization of our vulnerability and interconnectedness with the cosmos.
The installation is designed to evoke a dual response—one of liberation and one of trepidation. The sense of liberation comes from the profound awareness of being part of a larger, interconnected universe, where the self is but a small fragment of a grand, cosmic tapestry. Simultaneously, the exposure to the infinite unknown can elicit a sense of fear and disorientation, as the familiar boundaries of perception and reality are blurred.
“Out/In the Universe” invites viewers to embrace this dichotomy, encouraging contemplation of their place within the vast expanse of existence.
